Metal Sculptures
Anza Borrego Springs Metal Sculptures - This was the vision of Dennis Avery. He wanted to add free standing art to his property, the Galleta Meadows Estate, so that people could view and enjoy them without charge. He commissioned artist and welder Ricardo Breceda to craft sculptures for him.
The first sculptures started to appear along Borrego Springs Road in April 2008. The collection continued to grow to somewhere around 130 sculptures by 2012 when Dennis past away. Most of the sculptures are of prehistoric North American animals with a spattering of other subjects exist these includes a full sized jeep and a prospector complete with a mule.
Maps and Directions
It is difficult to find a good guidebook so provide that information. I did find a Google Map that Erin McNeaney reasonly made which I posted here.
To view maps and a guide I made you can click here Metal Sculptures map and Map Guide.
Have about 15 minutes then view this YouTube of the sculptures
Ricardo Brededa's Studio is on California Highway 79, an hour north of Borrego Springs and a half hour east of Temecula. Ricardo made the Anza Borrego sculptures.
He has a gallery that can be viewed for a small charge, which can be used to offset the cost of any purchases. It used to be free, but the wear and tear of all the human traffic necessitated a small entrance charge.
You can drive up close to all sculptures but do not drive on any sand that looks soft or if it has rained. If you do you may find you will regretted it. It will cost you $500 plus to get towed out of the sand. Follow where other cars have made a path, and you will not have any problems.
